West Dunbartonshire Council is the only local authority in Scotland not to pay out on a single pothole compensation claim. New figures released following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request showed that 36 claims were made by motorists for damage caused by crumbling roads in the area, but all of these were rejected.Previously 38 claims had been made in 2020/21, with eight paid out - totalling £1,356.In 2019/20 two appeals were accepted, with £351 paid in compensation.

Neighbouring Argyll and Bute, which includes Helensburgh and Cardross, paid out a total of £2,884 - with nine of the 24 claims made upheld.

Across the country only one in six claims for damage caused by potholes were compensated, however West Dunbartonshire is the only region where claims were received - but none were upheld. The council’s say the rejection of a claim means they were deemed not to be at fault.
