A pilot had a narrow escape when he was forced to bail out of his aerobatic plane moments before it crashed into a block of flats.

The incident happened during a flight above Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, according to a report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

The report revealed that the plane's canopy broke up without warning, causing the 62-year-old pilot, who has not been named, to suffer a deep cut to the face and lose sight in his right eye.

Feeling he had no other choice, the pilot decided to bail out of the aircraft. He managed to deploy his parachute and safely drift to the ground.
