It all started so well between the midfielder and the man who has this week been appointed Rangers boss, with Schrijvers starting 24 out of Clement’s first 25 games in charge of Genk when he took over as Smurfs gaffer back in 2017.But when he found himself benched for the crucial end-of-season play-off clashes that decide the destination of the Belgian title, Schrijvers knew it was time to move on.
While he ended up at Brugge, Clement got down to work constructing a side that would go on to claim the following season’s Belgian title - Genk’s only crown of the past decade. The trouble for Schrijvers was that his old boss soon followed him to West Flanders as Brugge made their move for the country’s hottest coaching prospect.
