An estimated two million individuals across Great Britain are grappling with vision problems or degenerative eye diseases. Over 59,000 adults under the age of 65 are receiving additional financial aid through Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland, while 48,695 people above the State Pension age are receiving weekly assistance through Attendance Allowance.

Three-quarters of those with a visual impairment are over 65, with approximately 8,000 working-age individuals registered as blind or partially sighted.

For adults who lose their sight later in life, it can be incredibly distressing as they feel unable to participate in activities they once enjoyed, such as driving, sports, reading and cooking.

Mobility can also be impacted, potentially leading to issues with independence and travel. However, it's crucial to note that the dedicated disability benefit for those over the State Pension age - Attendance Allowance - does not cover mobility needs.
