One in five Scots have no outdoor play areas within safe walking distance for kids

One in five Scots say they have no outdoor play areas or nature spaces within safe walking distance for kids to play, according to research.The annual community play study by housebuilder Redrow revealed 44 per cent of Scottish adults say they never see children playing outdoors any more.

It comes after a study last year showed some 300 play parks in Scotland had been closed over the previous decade while hundreds of others have fallen into disrepair.And it continues the worrying decline of outdoor play for kids across the country, despite the known benefits to physical and mental health.

Dad-of-two Sean Kerwin, who has been embroiled in a two-year battle to restore a decaying playground in Glasgow’s Queen’s Park, spoke of his frustration.

He told the Record: “In Glasgow, particularly, the play parks seem to be in quite a bad state of disrepair often.”Sean, whose sons are aged six and eight, added: “The hardest part is trying to get kids out of the house and break them off screens.
