Northern have reactivated ticket gates in bid to stop people making 'unnecessary day trips'

Northern have reversed a policy to stop checking tickets - blaming an uplift in passengers taking 'unnecessary day trips'. A week ago, the rail firm had announced they would no longer require passengers to show their tickets.

They also opened all ticket gates to reduce risk of transmission. At the time, Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said this policy would 'further limit person-to-person contact and help staff and passengers follow the advice from government on social distancing'.

However, the company has now done a u-turn and the gates have been closed again, in a bid they say, to deter those who are not key workers using services to take 'day trips'.
