First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced there will be no change to covid restrictions in Scotland in a blow to hopes of full crowds in time for the Scottish Premiership resuming.

Scottish sporting events have been restricted to just 500 spectators since Boxing Day as a result of restrictions imposed to combat the new Omicron wave of coronavirus.

It led to the Premiership bringing its winter break forward a week to avoid games being played in front of essentially empty stadia.

But Sturgeon has confirmed there are no changes planned as the new variant continues to spread across the country and it now looks increasingly doubtful full crowds will be permitted in time for the season resuming on January 17.Restrictions will be reviewed next week in Scottish football's last hope of getting crowds back in time for that deadline. The First Minister also announced an extra £5m of additional funding for sport in Scotland though it remains to be seen how much of that football will bank.
