Reddish man Paul Norton told Stockport's Nightingale crown court on Tuesday (June 1) that he heard his Manchester terrier squeal before he found Christopher Anthony Howe holding it by its neck.
Mr Howe, 33, is accused of then wounding Mr Norton's arm and face with a knife before later running through a river as he was chased by officers through Reddish Vale Country Park.
The court heard that Mr Norton had entered the park at the Woodstock Green entrance and allowed his dog off her lead as normal on May 24 last year.
