Man's body recovered from River Irwell after huge police presence near city centre

A man's body has been pulled from the River Irwell on the outskirts of Manchester city centre. Police received a call from a member of the public informing them of a body in the water at around 10:30am this morning.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and firefighters then began descending on the stretch of the river, next to The Lowry Hotel on Manchester's border with Salford.

The large section of footpath on the Salford side of the river was taped off. As was the Trinity Bridge which crosses from near Parsonage Gardens. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed a man was pulled from the water and declared dead at the scene. The man's identity has not yet been disclosed.
