David Henrie’s slick exercise in lite supernatural suspense is aimed at younger viewers, though their parents may also be diverted by the cast’s elder members, including Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco and Kevin James. It’s a fun movie that lands on the right side of “innocuous,” being pleasantly formulaic rather than simply bland.

Her new feature “A Mistake” hews back to her 2001 debut, “Rain,” in that it is set in her native New Zealand and adapts its script from a Kiwi author (in this case Carl Shuker’s fifth novel). Though not a knockout, the director’s return affirms her knack for intelligent adult drama, here hinging on issues of medical ethics and bureaucracy — Elizabeth Banks plays an Auckland surgeon whose reputation and career are threatened when a patient dies after what had been anticipated as a routine procedure.

More than a few, notably “Pet Sematary” and its ilk, have dealt with the … er, awkwardness when said child unnaturally comes back to life, or at least un-death. Smoothly crafted but uninspired “Here After” tries to have it both ways, playing that resurrection for horror-adjacent creepiness that never quite goes anywhere, then pivoting to a sentimental mix of sacrifice and redemption similar to “faith-based entertainment” without quite making the commitment.

After a point, it becomes a sheer, ghoulish fixation on real-life torture, rape and murder.

All had a gist in common: humanity being infiltrated and co-opted by a shape-shifting invasive force from outer space. Loosely playing on that theme, Zach Clark’s “The Becomers” adds a new wrinkle, in that this time the body-hopping entities don’t necessarily intend conquest.

Baby Reindeer‘s Richard Gadd has finally responded to a lawsuit from the woman who the Netflix show is reportedly based on.Fiona Harvey, the woman believed to be the inspiration behind Martha in Baby Reindeer, recently filed a $170million (£133m) lawsuit against Netflix.In a lawsuit filed earlier this month (July 6) in the US district court for the central district of California, Harvey accused the streaming giant of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence and violations of her right of publicity (via The Guardian).It follows the huge success of the drama series, which was created and written by comedian Gadd. He also portrays a fictional version of himself, Donny, in the show.The seven-part programme depicts Gadd’s real experience of being relentlessly stalked by an older woman called Martha.

Dennis Harvey Film Critic Even Mario Bava’s succinctly titled horror “Hatchet for the Honeymoon” 54 years ago did not imagine a more vividly unpleasant entrée to wedlock than “Crumb Catcher,” Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial bow. In this mix of home-invasion thriller and grotesque comedy, a just-hitched young couple already on each other’s last nerves are surprised by uninvited visitors, causing the night to go from bad to very much worse. If you can withstand spending nearly two hours in the company of these grating, argumentative characters, there are rewards to be had in a skillfully wrought, twisty suspense tale that releases to limited U.S.

Dennis Harvey Film Critic Mysterious are the ways of the Lord, but devious those of His opposite number in “Thine Ears Shall Bleed.” This enterprising first feature from Ben Bigelow recalls “The Witch” in placing another pious pioneer family at the mercy of the elements — and apparent occult forces — during an early chapter of American history. The command of atmospheric tension Robert Eggers demonstrated in his own debut is not much evidenced here, making for a middling supernatural drama that’s never terribly convincing, or scary. Nonetheless, it’s an indie sufficiently polished to attract viewers looking for offbeat genre fare that’s relatively restrained in graphic horror content.

Dennis Harvey Film Critic You might expect a film that begins with Mel Gibson announcing, “The Bible says we should rejoice in our suffering,” to be a little more high-minded than “Boneyard.” But this trashy trawl through a fictionalized version of the “West Mesa Murders” — a still-unsolved southwestern crime spree in our century’s early years — is the kind of dubiously moralizing exploitation exercise that makes “Sound of Freedom” look like a noble class act by comparison. Likewise “inspired by true events,” Asif Akbar’s movie alternates between lurid serial-killer suspense not far removed from the retro grindhouse ogling of concurrent “MaXXXine” and a convoluted procedural involving variably corrupt, conflicting investigators.

It has the feel of a literary adaptation that doesn’t quite translate to a different medium: While the individual thematic elements are intriguing enough, they just don’t come together on screen in sufficiently coherent or atmospheric form.
