Sir Ed Davey has defended one of his Lib Dem candidates in Greater Manchester who made a 'very bad joke' when she asked if a voter from Liverpool had been 'nicking stuff'.

Lisa Smart, who is hoping to become an MP in Hazel Grove, has apologised for the comments. But the Stockport councillor says she did not mean to make fun of Liverpudlians.

It comes after a video shared by the Daily Mail showed Coun Smart out campaining when she says to a voter from Liverpool: "So you've just been nicking stuff while you're here." Coun Smart told the Manchester Evening News she was 'genuinely mortified' to have upset someone on the doorstep.

But she claims she has used this phrase many times while door knocking when she meets someone who does not live at the address she is calling at.
