James Grundy to step down as Leigh MP ahead of General Election

James Grundy has announced he will step down as Leigh's MP ahead of the General Election. Mr Grundy became the town's first Conservative MP in the December 2019 vote, when Boris Johnson's Conservatives won a landslide victory with a promise to 'level up' and 'get Brexit done'.

But after more than four turbulent years for the party, Rishi Sunak called a vote for July 4 with his party lagging behind Labour in the polls.

Now, Mr Grundy has confirmed he will not be running for re-election in the town, which will be part of the new Leigh and Atherton seat following the July vote.

In a statement issued this afternoon (May 23), Mr Grundy said: "It is fair to say that the last few years have perhaps been the most challenging Parliament since the one that sat during World War II.
