Scott Dobie spends his working life kitted out as a firearms police officer in the Midlands these days. Twenty-two years ago the former Scotland international was firing shots for the boys in blue and white at West Brom. And when it came a promotion crunch away to bitter rivals Sheffield United then even armed cops would have struggled to contain the bedlam that ensued in what’s gone down in history as the Battle of Bramall Lane.

It went down in infamy as the first - and to date only - English professional football match to be abandoned due to a lack of players after Warnock’s United had three sent off and another two later left the field injured.Tomorrow two of the main protagonists that remarkable afternoon - Neil Warnock and Derek McInnes - will renew rivalries in east Ayrshire as the veteran boss takes his Aberdeen side to face McInnes’ Kilmarnock. It brings back explosive memories for Dobie who struck two goals on a fraught afternoon he recalls as “touchpaper” as West Brom edged closer to promotion to the Premier League.

If Dobie was netting a double then his skipper McInnes - who also bagged a super strike - was left SEEING double after being on the wrong end of a headbutt from Blades sub Patrick Suffo.Incredibly Suffo and Georges Santos were both red carded just 60 seconds after being subbed on by Warnock - with Santos instantly launching into a two-footed tackle on Andy Johnson who had the previous season left him nursing a fractured eye-socket.The challenge sparked an almighty melee in which McInnes was decked, the Blades lost their heads and referee Eddie Wolstenholme was caught in the middle of an almighty wrangle in which seething West Brom boss Gary Megson accused United of cheating.
