The iconic Burns statue in Dumfries is set to be cleaned up. Large patches of “organic growth” have been discovered on the artwork at the top of the High Street.
An application to clean the statue will be discussed at the planning applications committee on Thursday. Planning permission is needed as the statue is classed as a listed building.
In a report for the meeting, case officer Claire Ingram says the statue was last cleaned and repaired in 2018. A report by experts reveals that work to fix cracks and sandstone in the plinth remains intact with only “very small areas of slight deterioration”.
But the report adds: “Large areas are covered with infestations of organic growth, in the form of lichens and algae at the statue itself and thicker infestation of mosses at the plinth”.
