Iconic music TV channels to close in weeks - and fans are devastated

A string of hit music TV channels are to close in a matter of weeks after being axed in a cost-cutting exercise. Channel 4's The Box music channels - which as well as its flagship channel includes Music, Kiss, Magic and Kerrang - will stop broadcasting at the end of this month.

It's a tough blow for the fans still watching, especially given The Box's long history during the heyday of music TV, being founded as a competitor to MTV back in 1992.

Its original format involved viewers phoning to vote on the songs they would like to see and the channel is thought to have been instrumental in the rise of The Spice Girls, playing their first single Wannabe months before it was released.

Channel 4, who have been in overall control of the channel since 2019, said they were "no longer of sufficient scale to deliver meaningful scale to deliver meaningful return on investment".
