GMP issue statement as footage emerges of man punching female officer in Rochdale

Three police officers were left hurt as a man was detained on a street in Rochdale. Footage emerged on social media of the incident on Denmark Street on Sunday afternoon (September 9).

The clip, seen by the Manchester Evening News, showed a female officer being punched by a man as police attempted to detain him.

The man then appeared to throw more punches towards other officers who stepped in to help amid the chaotic scenes. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said officers were initially called to the scene after a 'report of concern for the welfare of a man'. They didn't need hospital treatment but are now being supported. The man was taken to hospital under the Mental Health Act. In a statement, the GMP spokesperson said: "At around 4.40pm on Sunday 8 September, we received a call regarding a concern for the welfare of a man on Denmark Street, Rochdale. "We supported North West Ambulance Service and officers attempted to detain the man under the Mental Health Act in the interest of safety, during which three officers were injured.
