Rishi Sunak has promised to scrap VAT on energy bills in a bid to help thousands of families during the cost of living crisis. The move is seen to be a helping hand to help Brits pay for their soaring energy bills in what is set to be a winter of discontent marked by massive bills, fuel and food prices.
Despite refusing to cut VAT for months by reasoning that it wouldn’t help those in need, the former Chancellor has now promised families he will save them £160 by scrapping the tax for one year. The U-turn means he will bring in the tax cut from October when bills are set to soar again.
Mr Sunak has denied that his pledge to cut VAT on energy bills was a U-turn. He said: “It’s reasonable that there is more than we can do”.
Mr Sunak has already set out a number of other cost of living packages to help families with unprecedented bill rises. They are: £400 discount on energy bills £150 for disability benefit claimants £650 one-off lump sum to poorer families £300 for pensioners Other promises made by the former Chancellor include a revamp of the benefits system in a bid to help more people return to work. The new work rule would see doubling the hours people on benefits have to work a week - currently nine but rising to 18 - to avoid looking for a full-time job.
