The mother of Emma Caldwell has asked Humza Yousaf "what are you waiting for?" as she called for a public inquiry over the investigation into her daughter's murder. The First Minister faces mounting pressure to appoint a judge from outwith Scotland to review why it took police so long to apprehend vicious killer Iain Packer. The SNP leader admitted today that Caldwell's family had been let down by the justice system as he faced questions at Holyrood from Scottish Labour and the Conservatives.Packer, 51, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 36 years yesterday after being found guilty of murdering Emma in 2005.He was also convicted of 11 rapes against nine women and 21 further charges including sexual assaults and abduction.Speaking at First Minister's Questions today, Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross read out a statement from Emma’s mother, Margaret Caldwell. He said: “Margaret had a message for the First Minister, she said this: ‘If Mr Yousaf genuinely cares about the victims and my Emma, then he has no other option but to organise an independent public inquiry’.“And she continued: ‘With respect, what are you waiting for?'”Humza Yousaf said he is not ruling out a judge-led public inquiry. He told MSPs there was a "strong argument" for an inquiry to be led by someone from outside the country. And the SNP leader shared his condolences to Caldwell’s mother, Margaret, and paid tribute to her “tireless” fight for justice.“There are some serious failings in this case, of that there is no doubt," he said.To sign up to the Daily Record Politics newsletter, click here.
