A pensioner with 'deteriorating' eyesight left a man with a bleed on his brain after striking him with his Mercedes - then hit a dog walker just weeks later.
Raymond Ibbett, 76, struck the first victim with his car on November 8, 2022, the Liverpool Echo reports. He told police officers he had 'gradual degradation in his eyesight'.
But he continued to drive and on November 28, Ibbett struck a walker and his dog as they crossed the street. A judge at Liverpool Crown Court told him that his 'selfish decision' to drive had led to 'catastrophic consequences for two people'. READ NEXT: Stop-and-search powers stepped up after stabbing as two arrested The court was told on Thursday (March 28) how in the first incident on November 8, the 64-year-old victim had got off a train at Hamilton Square Station in Birkenhead.
He was then walking to work at the Stena Line ferry terminal at around 5.30pm. His route saw him cross Canning Street at its junction with Egerton Wharf, but as he did so he was hit by Ibbett's Mercedes after the car had passed through an amber traffic light.
