A couple have died after creating a 'makeshift guillotine' and taking their own lives. The 'severed' heads of Hemubhai Makwana, 38, and 35-year-old wife Hansaben were found as part of an apparent sacrifice.The incident occurred in a village in Rajkot, India, as police confirmed details of the horrific event.

The heads of the couple rolled into a 'fire altar' between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, reports the Mirror.The pair leave behind two young children, a son aged 13 and a daughter aged 12, and left a 'note' for family asking for the kids to be taken care of.

The letter also indicated they had acted of their own accord and there were no parties to blame for the incident.Vinchiya police sub-inspector Indrajitsinh Jadeja said: "The couple used a makeshift guillotine to end their lives."It is believed they pulled up the blades of the guillotine themselves and released it in such a manner that their heads fell into a 'havan kund' [ritual fire pit]."The couple's children reportedly discovered the bodies upon returning to the farm, with relatives saying the property had been converted in to a temporary temple with a shrine to the Hindu god Shiva and they had been praying every day in the lead up to the their deaths."We are recording statements of the family members and trying to know the reason behind the couple's extreme step," the inspector told the Times of India."We will get a clear picture once we record statements of all the family members."Police confirmed an investigation was on-going but there had seemingly been no disputes between the family.If you need to talk and don't know where to turn to, the Samaritans operate a free helpline open 24/7 on 116 123.
