Blundering council chiefs have been forced to tear down fencing surrounding the Station Hotel after they mistakenly appeared with demolition signs - sparking fears the building was about to come down.

Workers are now scrambling to remove the fencing that was erected around the site only yesterday, after the misleading signs left residents fearing bulldozers had moved in just days after Monday's huge inferno. The fencing carried a sign which read "Demolition Works in Progress", sending social media into overdrive with residents believing the iconic hotel was set to be imminently flattened. The fencing was part of a tightening of security with 24 hour surveillance also watching over the crumbling relic, as emergency teams stepped down on Thursday.Ayrshire Live can now reveal that council chiefs are racing to remove the fencing which was "sourced from elsewhere", and put their own fences up.It comes as safety work is carried out by council crews to assess the damage left after the devastating blaze.A senior council official told Ayrshire Live: "This is a blunder at a time we don't need it.

The signs are historic and attached to fencing and are now in the process of being removed."New fencing will be erected with our own signs going up."A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “The fencing that has been put up around the former Station Hotel site has been sourced from a contractor, and these signs were already on the fencing. "This is not our signage and these will be removed and replaced with South Ayrshire Council signs advising that safety works are taking place.” Read next: Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
