Coronavirus crisis should see prisoners with less than three months left on their sentence released, says ex justice chief

Prisoners with less than three months to serve of their sentences must be released immediately to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Scotland’s former Justice Secretary has said.

Kenny MacAskill MP, who spent seven years as the Cabinet Secretary for Justice in Scotland, has called on the UK and Scottish governments to bring forward executive release orders for healthy prisoners coming to the end of their term.

SNP MP MacAskill said: “This is about the welfare of prisoners and about the welfare of prison officers who are working and living in closed environments.” MacAskill spoke out as news broke of one prisoner in HMP Kilmarnock has been taken ill with Covid-19.
