Coronation Street's boss has shared the reasons behind bringing Stephen Reid back and turning him into the soap's latest villain amid viewers' frustration over the storyline.

Some fans of the ITV soap have not been shy at sharing their dismay at the character's secret murderous reign on the cobbles.

It's been just over a year since Todd Boyce reprised the role of Stephen in the long-running soap, 15 years after he was last seen on the famous street, and 26 years after making his debut in the role of Audrey Roberts' son.

And as we now know, it didn't take long for viewers to see that the reason for his return wasn't at all innocent as with his finances in a dire state, he planned to fleece his own mother.
