Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Cher will perform at amfAR’s annual Cannes Film Festival gala on May 23, Variety can exclusively report. “I have such wonderful memories of being invited to host one of the first amfAR events in Cannes by my friend Elizabeth Taylor,” the music superstar said in a statement Monday. “I am extremely proud to be returning for this event’s 30th anniversary, and to continue to support the incredible work of this organization.
It will be a very special evening.” Since amfAR’s late founding international chairman Elizabeth Taylor hosted the first amfAR Gala Cannes in 1993 at the Moulin de Mougins, the benefit has become one of the most coveted tickets of the festival and has raised $264 million for amfAR’s lifesaving HIV/AIDS research programs.
Cher co-chaired the event in 1996 with Taylor. In 2015, the “Believe” singer was honored with amfAR’s Award of Inspiration at the gala. “We are thrilled to have Cher back in Cannes with us for the 30th edition of this event.
Cher has been a steadfast supporter of amfAR and people living with HIV/AIDS since the early days of the epidemic and we could not be more proud to have her with us once again for what promises to be an unforgettable evening,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost.
