Castle Douglas and District Angling Association held their annual river fishing competition on the river Urr on Saturday. The event was well attended with at least 14 rods, including four junior members, participating at some point throughout the day.Water conditions were very good and weather conditions were very favourable, although some might say it was a bit too bright for fishing. The winner of the competition was Gordon (Granny) Turner who had a red letter day when he caught a salmon of 18.5lbs mid morning, a sea trout of 4lbs early afternoon and a decent sized, out of season, brown trout in the late afternoon to complete what is known as a River McNab – ie catching a salmon, sea trout and brown trout in the one day.
Granny only ever fishes the fly and all the fish were caught with the same fly. These were the only notable fish caught on the day, a couple of small out of season brown trout were caught by other fishermen and all the fish caught were safely returned to the river.
The salmon, being the heaviest fish of the day, won Granny the Annual Challenge Cup which was presented to him at the Laurie Arms, Haugh of Urr where members and guests met up for a lovely spread of soup and sandwiches.
