Brian Harman has kept his hunting knife firmly to the throats of his Open rivals as he closes in on Hoylake glory. The American star is on the brink of a magical triumph in the 151st Championship as he leads second-placed Cameron Young by five shots going into the final round.
Harman, a wild hunter who admits he likes to do a bit of butchering, posted a third-round 69 to maintain his hefty advantage after surviving an early scare when being chased down by the game’s elite.Starting with a five-shot buffer, that advantage was briefly cut to just two after a wobbly opening to his penultimate round.
Two bogeys in his opening four holes coupled with Jon Rahm’s course record of 63 set just moments before the American took the first tee offered hope to his pursuers.
But lefty Harman regained his killer instinct to pull the trigger on another brilliant burst which took him clear. As several challengers failed to make proper inroads, the 36-year-old surged away again and now has one hand on the Claret Jug.Harman let a massive opportunity to win the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills slip away when Brooks Koepka came through to take the glory, having had a lead going into the final day.
