Bob Newhart dies aged 94 as tributes pour in for Elf and The Big Bang Theory star

Bob Newhart, beloved star of ELF and The Big Bang Theory, has passed away at the age of 94. His legacy has left fans mourning the loss of the cherished comedian.The announcement of the Emmy Award-winning actor's passing was shared on Thursday, 18 July.

His publicist Jerry Digney announced that he died "after a series of short illnesses". It was also confirmed that the funny-man, who swapped accounting for comedy, "died at home in Los Angeles" just one year after losing his wife of 60 years, Virginia "Ginnie" Newhart, who sadly passed away in April 2023.The star will be remembered most for The Bob Newhart Show and his outstanding guest appearances on the hit TV show, The Big Bang Theory.

In 2013, he clinched an Emmy Award for his role playing genius character Arthur Jeffries/Professor Proton, alongside the show's iconic characters Leonard, Sheldon, Raj and Howard.

He most famously starred as Papa Elf in the 2003 festive movie Elf, alongside Will Ferrell, reports the Mirror. In a poignant chat with CNN last year, Bob declared Elf as his most cherished gig. "Without question, the part of Papa Elf outranks, by far, any role I may have ever played," he shared. "My agent sent me the script and I fell in love with it." Bob appeared in many other movies, including Catch-22, In And Out and Legally Blonde 2.
