A babysitter who battered a two-year-old girl to death on his 15th birthday could be freed from jail within weeks. Karl McCluney kicked, punched and bit Demi Leigh Mahon at a house in Eccles, Salford, leaving her with 68 injuries and suffering brain damage.

After the vicious attack, the toddler was taken to hospital. Her parents were at her bedside when her life support machine was switched off two days later.

McCluney was found guilty of murder at Liverpool Crown Court on July 30, 2009. Ordering he be detained for 15 years, judge Mr Justice Sweeney described the attack as 'savage'.
