A bid to transform one of Ayrshire’s oldest railway tunnels into a stunning mural has been given a major cash boost. The Alloway Railway Tunnel has been awarded £25,000 from the People’s Postcode Trust.

The funds will edge a dream project closer to reality, with ambitious plans to create one of Scotland’s largest murals now on track.A group of local volunteers are working to see the dark and dilapidated tunnel into a colourful attraction.

They hope they can replicate the success of Edinburgh’s Collinton Tunnel, which turned a forgotten site in the capital into a bright trail. The team in Alloway have enlisted the help of the same artist who brightened up the Collinton landmark.Chris Rutterford has put pen to paper signing up for a project that is now full steam ahead.Alloway Tunnel Project chair Ron Ireland, said: “This is marvellous news.

Securing the funding means that we have been able to finally sign the contract with our mural artist, Chris Rutterford.“Work on the mural can now start and over the summer Chris will be preparing for various mural residences in local schools and Ayrshire College as well as public workshops so that we can involve as many of the local community as possible.“We’ve been working hard to raise funds for this amazing project, and we are delighted to receive a reward from the People’s Postcode Trust.
