‘At 52 I quit my corporate job and bought a vineyard in the South of France’

When Sally Evans turned 52, she decided it was time for change. Having spent decades climbing the corporate ladder and with a newly empty nest to contend with, Sally, now 62, decided to pack up her life and move to a winery in Bordeaux.The only twist was she had no experience in the wine industry. “I went back to work when my youngest son was two months old, so I thought I’d take some time to spend with him before he went to uni, which I did, and then when I was about to leave for university I was wondering what I was going to do next,” she tells OK!. “I was only 52, I had another life ahead of me, hopefully maybe 40 odd years.

I really wanted to do something for myself. I think women hitting 50 is quite a big moment for all kinds of reasons, like kids leaving home, menopause and all the stuff that people talk about.

I just thought, you know what? I'm going to have an adventure.” As a result, in April 2014, Sally’s new chapter began. Having found herself surrounded by people who could talk about wine around the dinner table, the former marketing director decided to begin studying wine.

However, what initially started as a bit of fun soon spiralled into something bigger and by the following March she’d made a life-changing purchase. “I came to Bordeaux and I bought a plot of vines and some old buildings, which was a little bit unbelievable.
