In the dead of night, immigration enforcement officers swooped on a Greater Manchester abattoir. Two men were arrested for working illegally following a raid which began at 11pm on Thursday (March 16), while the business owner could be fined as much as £40,000.

It followed a tip-off to the Home Office last year about people allegedly working illegally and living in accommodation at the site.

Officers visited the business last November, where they received an 'adverse reaction' during the visit, before a warrant was issued to return to the site last night.

The team carrying out the raid were prepared for a difficult night in challenging conditions, with live animals on-site. Officers were given the order to take their time in a briefing before the raid.
