Simon Lepori believes the Labour incumbent mayor is ‘weighed down’ by 15 years of his party’s involvement in GMP, and says the force is in need of a ‘fresh start’.

The former police authority was chaired by a Labour councillor, while Mr Burnham’s predecessor as police and crime commissioner was party colleague Tony Lloyd.

Mr Lepori admits austerity cuts introduced while the Lib Dems were in government with the Conservatives had an effect on GMP and other public services.
