Frustrated parents have hit out at World Book Day, calling it a "competition for rich kids". Children across Britain are dressing up as their favourite book characters today (Thursday).
But some parents have warned the original spirit has been lost - with costumes becoming an arms race. Many schools have asked children to just attend in sleepwear this year to keep costs and competition down.
Costumes can be expensive, some parents say. World Book Day 2024: Greater Manchester's best costume creations Annemarie Davies, a 48-year-old a mum-of-one from Pembroke, Wales, says she was tired of seeing parents sending their kids to school in costumes worth over £100.
The content creator said: "It's become a competition for rich kids - whereas for me, it's always been about reading the book and children getting into literature.
