Stephen Robinson admits the departure of Jim Gillespie would be a 'huge loss' for St Mirren amid reports that the Buddies vice-chairman is set to be named as the new chief executive of Rangers.Light Blues chairman John Bennett and the rest of the Ibrox board have been looking to fill the role since James Bisgrove took up a big-money offer to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah back in May.

Gillespie, 46, is said to be a lifelong Rangers fan and should he join the club, will be in for a tough start with the Gers still playing away from Ibrox due to essential repairs in the Copeland Stand.Irishman Robinson has highlighted Gillespie's role in helping St Mirren claim three top-six-Premiership finishes on the bounce, the latest of which saw the Paisley side play in Europe for the first time since for the first time since 1987.

Robinson also noted the 46-year-old's efforts in helping get a loan deal for midfielder Killian Phillips over the line earlier this weekSpeaking ahead of the visit of Celtic on Sunday, he said: "I can't comment on anything that is being written about Jim as obviously the conversations I have had in recent days is about St Mirren and how we can get signings in, but he was a big part in the Killian Phillips deal. "Jim's been fantastic for me and has been a driving force behind the football club and me coming here.

He's pushed the football club forward massively on and off the pitch. I have not asked the question as it is none of my business but if it is true then he would be a huge loss for us."Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond. You can also follow our dedicated Rangers
