The creator of Weeds is not enthused by the idea of a sequel series that is in development at Showtime. The original series premiered in 2005 and came to a close in 2012.
A few years later, it was announced that Starz was developing a sequel with franchise star Mary-Louise Parker returning to star and executive produce.
In 2023, the project moved networks. While at the Seriesly Berlin TV conference, Weeds creator Jenji Kohan explained that she didn’t think a spinoff series made sense at the time, going as far as to call it a “money grab.” Keep reading to find out more… “I feel like now that pot is legal [in many places] that I don’t really know if there’s more story to tell,” she explained, via Deadline. “I think Weeds was done, and I think it’d be a money grab a little bit, and I’m not involved with it.” Jenji said that she would likely not move forward with a sequel but added that it was the network’s choice. “They can do what they want, but this wouldn’t be associated with the team that made [the original series],” she said, “and I think there are many other stories to be told.
