Brits heading to a popular holiday destination this summer have been warned of huge crowds of tourists. Croatia has soared in popularity in recent years as a cheaper alternative to traditional places such as Spain and Italy.

The country has also been in the spotlight as a filming location for the cult TV series Game of Thrones. The historic city of Dubrovnik has been a particular tourist magnet, as many scenes of the show were filmed there.

As a result crowds of visitors have descended upon the city. In fact data from 2019 by Statitsa found that it was ‘the most over-touristed’ city in Europe, more than Venice or Barcelona.

Locals were outnumbered by around 36 to one that year, with nearly 1.5million people visiting Dubrovnik. READ MORE: Tourism warning as Spanish island in ‘critical situation’ Dozens of Tripadvisor reviews of the city mention having to “avoid the tourist crowds”.
