The symptoms of 'very infectious' Shigella to look out for as urgent warning issued amid 'concerning rise' in cases

A health warning has been issued amid a 'concerning rise' in cases of Shigella, a gut infection that is 'very infectious'. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported the surge in cases of 'extensively antibiotic-resistant' Shigella sonnei infections, that are mainly affecting gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

Since the beginning of this year, the number of Shigella cases has increased by 53 per cent, much of which was driven by 'a cluster of extensively-antibiotic resistant Shigella sonnei', of which there have been 97 cases to November this year, compared to just four cases last year. Cases have been diagnosed in all regions of England, but cases are mainly concentrated in London, the north west, and the south east of England.

Although symptoms can be unpleasant, in most cases subsiding within a week, some individuals may need hospitalisation and require intravenous antibiotic treatment.
