It seems hard to believe but Manchester once considered the possibility of building a monorail system. Back in 1966, the proposed 16 mile overhead monorail running from Middleton to Manchester Airport was seriously considered.
A monorail is often used to describe any form of elevated rail or people mover on a single track for a passenger carrier to ride on or be suspended below.
In popular culture the monorail became a plot line of a famous episode of the Simpsons, when Marge tries to stop the town of Springfield from buying a faulty monorail system from a smooth-talking conman. Perhaps not quite as dramatic but in January 1966, The Guardian newspaper reported Manchester City Council was asked to agree to an intensive feasibility study for a £21m monorail system for the city.
