As part of the lockdown aimed at slowing the spread of Covid-19, the Government announced new public health regulations banning gatherings, closing shops and other businesses, and restricting unnecessary journeys.

The police can now issue individuals with £60 fines if they failed to comply after officers had engaged with them, explained the risks to public health and encouraged voluntary compliance.

In the period from the introduction of these regulations up to Easter Monday (April 13), Greater Manchester Police had issued 38 notices for failure to comply, according to provisional figures released by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC).
