Lesley Manville "always thought" she was going to play Queen Elizabeth on 'The Crown. ' The 66-year-old star is the latest actress to take on the role of the late monarch's sister Princess Margaret - who died in 2002 at the age of 71 - in the Netflix biographical series but thought when she was asked to meet with creator Peter Morgan that she would be playing the Queen herself before the part went to Imelda Staunton.

She said: "It’s funny. I’m going to be absolutely honest about this. I always thought maybe I could be the final Queen. When my agent called and said, ‘Can you go to Peter Morgan’s house on Monday?' - that's how it happened for me, and I think it happened for Imelda - I never thought of myself as a Margaret.

My immediate thought was the Queen, the Queen! The 'Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris' star went on to explain that she initially was unsure whether she could play the part of Princess Margaret - who was known for her lifestyle of partying and having a string of reputed romances - because she doesn't see herself as glamorous but was offered the part on the spot.

She told The Times: "My agent said, ‘He wants to talk to you about playing Margaret. ’ I thought, ‘Hang on a minute. Margaret?
