IN its heyday, Waterloo Road was a ground-breaking drama. First airing in 2006, the series starred the likes of Cutting It star Jason Merrells as the struggling headmaster Jack Rimmer, Philip Martin Brown as disgruntled dinosaur Grantley Budgen, and Jill Halfpenny as keen drama teacher Izzy Redpath.
The series was bold in it’s approach in the subjects which included, bullying, drug use, class divides, homosexuality, cancer, teenage pregnancy, sexual assault, corruption, baby smuggling, underage sex work, young carers, drunk driving, drug dealing, gangs and guns.
From having one child murder her father due to the way he used to sexually abuse her, to a sixth form group gulping Ethanol whilst studying in the science lab, it’s safe to say British television screens never saw scenes like it before.
When I first tuned into the first episode of the revival, it was great to see familiar faces like Donte Charles (Adam Thomas) and Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin).
