A viscally ludicrous examination of Mexico’s colonial history and the duplicitous nature of high-wealth, the film screens as part of the Harbor strand, dedicated to a wide range of contemporary narratives.

Shakira has always expressed her pride for her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, and has brought great joy to her fellow Colombians. In a heartwarming gesture, the city has honored her with a 21.3-foot (6.50-meter) bronze statue. During a special ceremony, the sculpture was unveiled on December 26th in the presence of Shakira’s parents, Mr. William Mebarak and Mrs. Nidia Ripoll.

Shakira is getting a monument in her hometown. Built in partnership with Barranquilla’s mayor’s office, Shakira’s statue is made out of bronze and will measure about 20 feet high. The statue is currently under construction and is expected to weigh between three to four tons.

There is so much to appreciate about A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One. The film chronicles the lives of native New Yorkers from 1994-2005, which was a period of transition in NYC. The atmosphere began to change, as stop and frisk was over-utilized, gentrification was displacing the people of Harlem at rapid speed, and the culture of the city gave way to sterilization. Now there are even fewer resources available, the wage gap is beyond repair and it’s unaffordable. Rockwell drew inspiration from this and created a coming-of-age story about finding an identity and chosen family.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic You’ve heard the expression, “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.” Well, “The Grab” makes the case that society had best brace itself for disorder, since certain parties are gobbling up the world’s food and water resources while the rest of us are distracted by other things. Produced in association with the Center for Investigative Reporting, “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s astonishing, eye-opening doc hits us with the idea that the next world war won’t be fought over ideology, oil or border disputes, but basic resources like meat, wheat and water, none of which should be taken for granted. Experts call this field “food security,” and the entire system is more fragile than it looks. World populations are climbing while water resources are dwindling, which has led countries such as Saudi Arabia and China to seek farmland on other continents. Among its myriad examples, “The Grab” focuses on a 15-square-mile expanse in La Paz, Ariz., an arid desert locale where there’s no limit to the amount of water landowners can pump from the aquifers. Arizona’s policy of unrestricted access means Saudi investors can legally tap into the water table to grow fields of hay, which will be shipped home to feed their cattle, even if it means draining the wells of local farmers in the process.

The former professional surfer — who has been creating private dinners for the likes of the Jonas Brothers, Jason Derulo and Lil Nas X for a decade — calls his approach “guilt-free.” Fiish focuses on sustainable practices such as sourcing almost all the fish from the local waters of California and Baja California.

But actor Yeray Albelda says it’s the norm that “people are exhausted” in many productions.The Mexican actors union ANDA also held a remote press conference Tuesday to weigh in on the fatal crash.In an interview with Variety, Albelda, one of the six survivors of the crash, said he was told that a mechanical failure might have caused it. Others, he was told, have speculated that the driver was trying to avoid a pothole or even a deer.

But the residents of these remote highlands are also endangered, as director Alejandro Loayza Grisi reveals in his sublime, quietly elegiac feature debut, “Utama,” focusing on an elderly couple who refuse to relocate to the nearby city of La Paz, even as mountain glaciers melt, rains become less reliable and their herd of llamas slowly succumb to dehydration.Played by actual couple José Calcina and Luisa Quispe (authentic, nonprofessional actors whom Loayza Grisi had to convince to participate), long-married Virginio and Sisa share a small mud house without electricity or running water.

The film world premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received the special jury prize at the Horizons strand and went on to play at New York and San Sebastian, among other festivals.

Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentBrussels-based company Best Friend Forever has acquired Bolivian director Kiro Russo’s “El Gran Movimiento” which will world premiere at Venice in the Horizons section. “El Gran Movimiento” marks Russo’s follow up to his 2016 feature debut “Dark Skull” which won a prize at Locarno and played at San Sebastian, among other festivals.

As coronavirus case numbers surge across the world, hospitals are in urgent need of medical protective gear. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem did their part on Friday, March 27, announcing that they've "found a source" to purchase supplies for Madrid. "After days of searching for a way to locate medical supplies that are urgently needed in these difficult times so that we could buy them and donate them to hospitals, Javier and I finally found a source," the 45-year-old Oscar-winner wrote on Instagram. "Thanks to the logistic help of Indetex, we have been able to buy 100.000 Nitrilo gloves and 20.000 surgical FFP2 masks, which arrived today in La Paz hospital In Madrid."
