The Met Office has warned of a 'supercell' thunderstorm that is about to hit the North West after reports of a 'localised tornado'.
Around 100 homes were damaged in Stalybridge, Tameside, as Storm Gerrit swept across the country last night. Numerous reports were made to Greater Manchester Police at around 11.45pm on Wednesday, and the force declared a major incident due to the “severity” of the damage caused and the potential risk to public safety.
No injuries were reported but many residents were forced to leave their homes. Forecasters have since predicted a 'supercell' thunderstorm is about to hit parts of Lancashire, with added heavy rain and hail.
It's likely to remain windy, especially on higher ground, the Met Office has said. In a post shared on X - formerly Twitter - the Met Office said: "A supercell thunderstorm is currently moving east across Morecambe Bay, Lancashire.
