Ann Widdecombe has come to the defence of Strictly Come Dancing amidst allegations of abuse. The ex-Tory MP, who took part in the 2010 series alongside Anton Du Beke, has said that the stars have the power to say when enough is enough, suggesting they are not powerless in the face of the professional dancers.

This follows revelations that the BBC plans to introduce chaperones for all rehearsals and add two welfare producers to the team, in response to complaints about two former professionals on the show.

The broadcaster is also set to provide additional training for its production staff, affirming that it takes its duty of care "extremely seriously".

Both Graziano Di Prima and Giovanni Pernice have recently exited the show, with an ongoing BBC investigation into the matter.
