The 32-year-old was later detained by officers who discovered he was carrying a knuckleduster with a lock knife concealed inside it.
Smith appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday and admitted a charge of producing cannabis at his then-home in Macmerry.
He also pled guilty to possession of an offensive weapon and driving while disqualified.
