Firefighters in Portugal are battling to control several wildfires all of the country that have destroyed thousands of hectares of land.

The European country recorded its highest temperature of the year so far on Monday, August 7, with the mercury peaking at a sweltering 46.6C in the city of Santarem.

It's the third heatwave that Portugal has experienced this summer, and the high temperatures have resulted in devastating fires breaking out and people being forced to flee their homes for safety.

Over the weekend, a wildfire in the region of Castelo Branco that began on Friday, August 4 required over one thousand firefighters to keep it under control - but there are still many areas that are at risk.
