'People are cancelling Christmas': Anger after agency nurses have pay cut for December shifts

An agency nurse says staff are in uproar after their pay was cut days before December shifts began, claiming some of them have had to 'cancel Christmas'.

Since the summer, agency staff at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust were on a temporarily 'enhanced' payment scheme, increasing the normal rate for an agency nurse from £16-an-hour to £25-an-hour.

But on November 24, they received a message to say those increased pay packets would stop just six days later on November 30, according to an agency nurse who works shifts for the trust.

The nurse, who wishes to remain anonymous, says this change ruined the Christmas plans of many staff like her. "All of the shifts we've booked for December, thinking they would give us a certain amount of money for over Christmas, these will all go back down to the normal rate," she said. "I was extremely upset, but it's not just me.
