Paisley Abbey has a special place in the hearts of Buddies – and now it could be elevated in the eyes of the rest of the world too amid a bid to get it added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The iconic religious building is part of the 109 European Federation of Cluniac Sites - churches, monasteries and abbeys built in the Middle Ages - which are working towards the important status. There are currently 1,199 World Heritage status properties in the world, 33 of them are in the UK, and just six of those in Scotland. If the bid were to be successful, Paisley would be put on the map as a location of great historical significance, potentially drawing in additional tourists as a result. It is hoped the abbey, together with the other sites, will create an internationally significant “cultural route” of Cluniac venues across Europe. For more than 200 years before building work even began at Paisley, the French abbey of Cluny in Burgundy had been at the centre of the most successful religious order in Europe.Renfrewshire Live, the new free app dedicated to bringing you around the clock breaking news, is now available to download.Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.
