Welfare fraud investigators are set to be given the power to take money directly from fraudsters' pay slips, it has been reported.
The new law is part of plans to crack down on fraudsters and is expected to be one of several powers included in the government’s forthcoming Fraud, Error and Debt Bill, according to the Sunday Telegraph.
The legislation, which was announced by the Prime Minister at the Labour Party conference last September, aims to combat benefit fraud by "modernising" the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with an anticipated saving of £1.6 billion over the next five years. In an article for the Sunday Telegraph, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall described the current situation as "absurd" noting that the powers of investigators have not been updated for two decades.
