New bee species found doing well at Perthshire mountain reserve

Ben Lawers nature reserve in Perthshire is abuzz with excitement after it was found to be home to several species of bee not found there before.

A number of species have been recorded at Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve among heather uplands and along the Morenish Woodland Trail for the first time by an expert making a survey last summer.The floral diversity of Ben Lawers provides perfect habitat for nine of the 24 known British bumblebee species, including the rare bilberry bumblebee (Bombus monticola) and the broken-belted bumblebee (Bombus soroeensis).The conservation charity’s pioneering work to restore mountain woodland has also created habitats for solitary bees.Local bee expert Anthony McCluskey tracks these insects and has made.
